Bucky Barnes | MCU | OTA

I. Parties are Not His Thing

He had been sure the screen was a hallucination and the feelings of danger were paranoia born of... well, assuming HYDRA was after him for refurbishment. But yelling at his hallucinations didn't get him anywhere, and pressing a button on a floating screen did, and now he's just. Confused. And scared out of his mind, but that's normal.

The streets are too noisy, too crowded, too colorful. The people are so different from the streets of DC that he can hardly parse them all. He's been free from HYDRA for a week, what the hell even is this? Has his brain finally cracked the rest of the way without maintenance?

He hovers close to buildings, instinctively looking for cover, places to duck into-- but following his nose because it's also been a few days since he's eaten. Catch him peering at whatever you're eating from a distance, or scarfing down something some kind digimon has offered him as if afraid it's going to be taken away, or just kind of staring blankly around him as if trying to make sense of what he's seeing.

II. Partners Are Weird

Being approached by a weird little pig... elephant... thing that only comes up to his knees didn't really help the anxiety. But he lets them tag along. He's not going to question when they say their name is Bakumon, but he doesn't have anything to offer back (shut up, Steve, he's still not sure he believes you about that name), so they're just calling him "Partner".

He's not sure he likes that. But he's not sure he dislikes it, either.

Mostly once Bakumon joins him, they sit to one side of the largest gathering and people-watch. Monster watch. Whatever. "That's a Cutemon," Bakumon says calmly, gesturing with their snout. "That one is a Coronamon." They pause and nudge the plate in his hand, then add, "You should eat some more, you're too thin."

III. Non-Lethal Is Tricky

The first time he nearly squishes a Numemon, more out of being startled by the screaming little thing and its projectiles than a real intent to kill, Bakumon headbutts him with their little tusks and throws off their aim.

"What?" he demands. He was attacked. Surely destroying the threat is correct?

"Try not to kill anyone, Partner," Bakumon says, sounding weary, and promptly scares the creature off instead by summoning some kind of shadow thing that reminds him uncomfortably of a looming haloed chair.

After that he walks more carefully around Bakumon, and settles for kicks instead of smashes the next time he's attacked.
